Mid-Atlantic Beer Festival
Washington, DC
Sat. 9/13/97

Becky's Beers:
Shenandoah Brewing Co., Annandale, VA: Whitewater Wheat:
There was not much flavor to this beer. For someone looking for a "beer-flavored" beer, this might be it. It was refreshing in the mouth on a warm late summer day, but rather light on body. 7.5

Virginia Beverage Company, Old Town Alexandria: Maerzen:
Can't say anything bad about this beer. Good body, color, balance & flavor. The caramel really shone in the finish. This beer tasted even better as it warmed in my cup! A very drinkable beer. 8.7

Potomac River Brewing Co., Chantilly, VA: Honeysuckle Razz:
The raspberry flavor is very subtle and splendid. The honey mentioned in the title is more pronounced in the aroma than in the flavor. This is an easy to like summer beer and like all others we've discovered at Potomac, these guys know what they're doing. 8.6

John Harvard's, Washington, DC: JHBH Dunkel Hefeweizen Bock: Funny to see a dark hefe and the head took up two inches in my cup! However, this beer was not described as hoppy. I would like to see what their definition of hoppy is! Hop aroma assaults the nose while sniffing for aroma and obliterates the characteristic hefeweisen fruitiness. I did find that flavor - buried - most of the way into the sample. 6.7

Oxford Brewing Co., Linthicum, MD: Oxford Raspberry Wheat Ale: Our final beer of the day. Nice color, good aroma. Gently effervescent. A not overpowering raspberry. A good way to finish. 8.0

John's Beers:
Shenandoah Brewing Co: Chocolate Porter: a nice color - a litle short in body. It had a nice chocolate flavor but a bit unbalanced. I'd probably drink it again. 7.8

Blue-N-Gold Brewing: Union Jack: Good red color. A light body. Moderately hopped. A little weak in the finish. Not outstanding, but a good flavor. I'll probably order this again. 8.2

Williamsville Studley Brown Ale: An interesting cross between a regular ale and a nut brown. Not much head, but a nice nut brown color. Lightly hopped but tasty. 7.9

Sisson's Hefeweizen: The clove taste is overwhelming. There is a banana odor, but the taste is all cloves. Maybe Mega [referencing a friend at the time who enjoyed clove cigarettes] would like this beer, but I don't. 6.0

Oxford Raspberry Wheat Ale: A good reliable light beer. Thirst quenching. A little more raspberry flavor than in other batches. Tasty. 8.0
