House Brews:
Barrell Stout
McKenzy Brothers Red (sample)
Maple Leaf Lemon Wheat
Pale Ale
Olympic Gold Pale Ale
Winterfest (J)
Marzen (B)
Very busy - of course, it's Mother's Day!
Marzen: Pale golden color. Effervescent but no head! Aroma is a very light smell. Reminiscent of the aroma of Molson or Labatts (well, they did say Canadian style). Ok, this is what it tastes like too. Better than Budweiser but far far too weak for this now-educated palate. For what they attempted to brew, they succeeded. This is a non-threatening beer for the Bud crowd. It is not a Marzen. 7.2
Winterfest: A dunkels-style beer. Good aroma. A creamy head that disappeared quickly. Not much of a taste initially - a decent malt taste in the finish. Frankly, it's a very average beer that's weaker than I want and without much character. 7.4
McKenzy Brothers Red Ale: Not a lot of red in the actual color of the beer. A thick creamy head over a murky golden beer. Aroma - none discernible. Flavor - the closest it comes it a gentle tingle when initially put into the mouth. No finish to speak of - a very gentle taste of hops. The body is good. That part they have correct. But less flavor than the Bud clone - and less than a Molson. 6.8

Red Brick Station Brewpub
White Marsh Brewing
White Marsh, MD
Sat, 4/25/98, 6pm
[open]
House brews:
Avenue Ale
Spooners Stout (B)
Something Red (J)
Honeygo Lite
Seasonal: Station Bitter
In a mall-type environment. Business is booming!
Stout: Fat, creamy head. Probably pumped through a nitrous pump. Almost black in color. Aroma is faintly malty - is hard to discern through the foam! Two sips and still only tasting the head. It is on the bitter side. As advertised, malt and hops are both in the flavor - seemingly the two flavors never meet. Initial taste is all malt - finish is all hops. Not much happens in the middle. A difinite bitter aftertaste, as in the English style. 7.7
Something Red: Pleasant hoppy aroma. A moderate head with some staying power. The initial taste is nicely balanced - the hops take over and mug the malt in the finish. On certain swallows the hops can leave an unpleasant aftertaste in the mouth. The beer definitely has a lot of flavor, but the balance is off. Also, body is a bit on the thin side (not badly). 8.0
A small disappointment: We were told of 5 available beers, then saw a sampler tray of 6. The waitress mentioned the "cask conditioned" ale - like the scotch ale mentioned in Barleycorn.

House Brews:
Water Gap Wheat
Purist Pale Ale
Jolly Scot (B)
Susquehanna Stout (J)
Seasonals:
Hoppy New Year IPA
Heather Ale
Riverside Red Ale
Hefeweisen (sample)
Warehouse style building. Nice stained glass doors at entry.
Jolly Scot: (Scottish Ale): Thick foamy cream colored head. Clear dark red color. Aroma heavy on malt. Body is decent, a tad on the light side. Finish... not found on the first swallow. It's better on the 2nd but could definitely be improved. There is a warm glow in the thoat, but it's more of a feeling than a taste. 7.8
Susquehanna Stout: Nice head and aroma. Dark stout color. Nice hoppy flavor in the initial swallow, which disappears in the finish. The body is pretty good - a little more body would have been nice. There is a hint of a nice complex stout taste - but only a hint. Not bad, but it could be a lot better with some work. 7.8
Hefe-weisen: Thick, almost whipped-cream head. Murky color - definitely unfiltered. Aroma heavy on banana! And these bananas are ready to turn into bread. It's almost comical that the flavor is, for all intents, almost entirely the clove. Body and carbonation are top-rate. Too much! of both banana in the aroma and clove in the taste. 6.8

Ram's Head Tavern
Fordham Brewing
Annapolis, MD
Sun 4/5/98, 1pm
[closed as a standalone brewpub: Fordham Brewing purchased by Coastal Brewing in Delaware and the beers are still being served at this tavern and other places]
House Brews:
Vienna lager (seasonal)
Dusky Shark (seasonal - black lager) (J)
Altbier
Helleslager (B)
Victor E. Light
Blue Point Oyster Stout
Helles Lager: Light, almost weak, golden color. Thin head. Aroma is initially quite yeasty with faint malt undertones. No hop aroma. Body is thin. Most of the flavor is in the finish, which is where the hops come out. The flavor at finish is a good one - too bad there is next to no flavor in the rest of the tasting experience. 7.9
Dusty Shark: No head. Very malty aroma. The initial taste is malty, but not unpleasant. The hops show up in the finish. The body is better than the lager, but is still on the thin side. There's nothing majorly wrong with this beer, but there's nothing special about it either. Both beers are rather heavily carbonated. 7.8
Food was pretty good!

House Brews:
Marzen
Dunkles (J)
Pils
Weizen (B)
seasonal: Altfest
Weizen: Opaque/murky golden color. Foamier head than usual in wheat beers. A pungent traditional weizen aroma. Body perhaps a tad light, but barely noticeable. The flavor is more predominately banana then clove. A decent finish. Beer would improve if the banana could be muted a bit. Carbonation is well effected. Only real problem with this beer is the out of balance flavor. It is noticeable. 7.9
Dunkels: Nice head on the beer. A pleasant malty aroma. Very malty taste. I know a Dunkels is supposed to be a malty style, but this is a bit much. This beer needs something to balance the malt. Otherwise, not bad. 7.6

House Brews:
Wheatfield Ale
Gettysburg Golden
Amber-Ham Lincoln Ale (J)
Buford's Brown Ale (B)
Devil's Den IPA
Pickett's Porter
North & South (Black & Tan)
Our 2nd visit here, but 1st since this beer diary came into being. A minimal "restaurant". All beers advertised as unfiltered.
Brown Ale: Medium head. Deep garnet color. A malty sweet aroma. Good carbonation and body. Most of the actual flavor comes out in the finish, but it's not overpowering. The malt and hops are well balanced, but there's not quite enough of either to truly define a "flavor". It's drinkable and it does have character - could use more something to perk it up... flavor... oomph... da kine! 7.7
Amberham Golden Ale: Nice cloudy dark amber color. The initial aroma is fairly hoppy. Somewhat weak taste which shows up a little more at the finish. The balance between hops and malt is nice. The beer needs more oomph. I feel like telling this beer "it's ok, you're a good beer, don't be shy". A little weak in the body. Enjoyable - but could be excellent with some work. 8.0
We both agree n- this beer could use assertiveness training!

Sweetwater Light
Last Chance Lager
Octoberfest (B)
Snake River Pale Ale (J)
Road Kill Barleywine
Black & Tan
Black Stallion Oatmeal Stout
(most currently unavailable)
Situatid in Southwestern pueblo style building.
Octoberfest: Weak red color. Thick creamy head. Aroma fairly hoppy for this style of beer. Beer is not horrible, but lack character. Body rather thin. Taste not at all complex. No finish to speak of. All flavor is in the beginning - a mild burst then quickly dissipates. I've had worse, but I've had much better. 7.4
Snake River Pale Ale: A decent head that dissipates. A pleasant hoppy and malty taste that totally disappears at the finish. A light coppery color. It needs body - it has little body. Not horrible, but ordinary. 7.4
